Creating a Kick-ass Morning Routine

Step 1: Get Your A** Out of Bed!

Step 2: You do you

There are plenty of things I could tell you that you should do every morning, but if I told you that there was a specific list of awesome morning activities you’d probably hate my guts. Here’s what I will say about morning routines, they’re totally dependent on one thing: you.

  • What do you want to get out of it?

    • Weight loss
    • Health
    • Mental Health
    • “Me time”
    • Family time
    • Couple time
    • Goal-tackling
  • What actions could you do every day that would bring you closer to your ideal life?

    • 30-minutes walking your dog?
    • Reading 5 pages of a book
    • Reading the Bible for 5 minutes daily
    • Praying or meditating or just being quiet for 10 minutes daily
    • Watching funny YouTube videos
    • reading inspirational blogs

So basically, this one is on you… what do you want out of your morning?

Personally, I find waking up just a little earlier so that I don’t feel rushed is wicked helpful. (You might know this if you’ve read How to Get Your A** Out of Bed!) I’ve added and rejected countless habits based on my mood and my current goals.

Some habits I’ve loved:

    • silence, affirmations, visualization, exercise, reading, scribing.
    • Read the book The Miracle Morning for more on this!
  • 10 Deep Breaths

Practicing deep breathing when I’m calm helps me to use this strategy when my day gets hairy. It’s useful to bring any coping strategies you need to practice into your morning routine. Before I even get out of bed, I rest my hand on my stomach and take 10, deep, belly-breaths.

  • Yoga

I’ve never felt better than when I was hitting the mat every morning for 10 to 30 minutes, stretching out the kinks and building my muscles.

  • Connecting with your Love

When I was doing my “SAVERS” routine, I was waking up at 4 and busy busy until 5. Then I showered and then my hubby was up and off to work in the blink of an eye. It was like we never had time to talk, mostly grunt. Since not connecting with my husband is not one of my goals, I had to make some changes. In particular, I changed it so that we were both in bed when we wake up… so we could wake up together (Aww romantic… but seriously I missed that morning breath smooch).

So here’s the deal, if you want to rock your world just pick three things to do every single morning and wake up a little earlier to get them done. Like seriously 15 minutes is all it takes…

I’m planning to rock my world again! If I’m being honest my main priorities are my husband, my confidence, and my health. These are the things I’m working on right now.

What are your top three priorities?

If I were to create a measurable goal for each of my priorities, they might look like this:

By May 2018…

  • I’ll perform at least one act of kindness each week for Bill. (Husband)
  • I’ll read the book “You Do You” to further build my toolbox for self-confidence. (Confidence)
  • I’ll build up my walking stamina to three, 30-minute dog walks per week. (Health)

Here’s how they’d fit into my morning routine:

5 minutes- read a few pages of You Do You

5 minutes- think about the next act of kindness or start the next act of kindness

30 minutes- walk this stinky dog
